I used to be an anime and animal lover at the same time. I have this extraordinary love for animals, especially for cats, that is why I loved Poyopoyo Kansatsu Nikki.
It is a story about a totally rad cat. What’s new here is that the cat is circular. Awesome thing, I thought.
We've seen a lot of cat-based anime in the past - like Nyanpire. Usually in these shows, friends and neighbors join in on the shenanigans, providing a positive outlook... and honestly that is all there really is in this lovely show.
The entire cast of the show is an adorable collection of walking gags. I mean, SERIOUSLY. Moe, Poyo's owner, is a happy woman who takes things in stride to an absurd degree. An example of this is how she takes in Poyo after using him as a cushion when she passed out on the sidewalk. In contrast, her brother Hide is on the grumpy side, but his battle for supremacy with Poyo is one of the funniest things about the show. Their father is a strict looking man with a soppy soft heart underneath his tough outside. Kuro, the neighbor's cat, has a close connection with Poyo... so close that he regularly bumps Poyo, despite the fact they are both male. Hide's friend is a guy who has a thing for Moe, and a lassie who has a crush on hide and has a hard time handling her hyperactive dog. All the characters are used exclusively for comedic effect, there is not much new they can be with only 3 minutes per episode, but they certainly seal that role very well.
Consistently and hugely enjoyable, entertaining to all ages, and completely charming – it remains nothing but a ball of pure excellence I hope this gets a second season!
